Research Associates (RA) Program in Emergency Medicine
St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport CT
The Research Associates Program employs a rolling admissions process.  This is based on the date
when the application, Criminal Background Check Request (CBC) and application fee are received.  

There are forty-four (44) slots each semester
  • Applications received after those slots are filled will be placed on a "wait list."
  • Position for choosing the shift you will serve for the semester in the Lottery are determined by:
  • first, the number of semesters you have served as a RA, including productivity during those
    semesters
  • then by special circumstances, such as being from away,
  • then, by the date of receipt of the application, Criminal Background Check request and
    application fee.

Applicants to the RA Program, including those who have already served as RAs in previous semesters,
must download the following application material to your computer and then complete:

3. Immunization form    

  • must bring a copy with you to the St. Vincent's Immediate Health Care Center (IHC) for your
drug testing
  • returning RAs: only documentation of a PPD test for tuberculosis w/in 12 mos. is required

Then, submit the
application material as e-mail attachments to:

There is a $200 non-refundable application fee payable
On-line payment this fee covers:  
  • Criminal Background Check (CBC)
  • Drug Testing
  • Uniform shirts (x 2)
  • Administrative cost

Lastly, you need to secure a
Letter of endorsement from your Health Professions Adviser using the format
in the link and sent on official school stationary as a PDF file (preferable) or by snail mail (discouraged, but
acceptable) to the Research Associates address above.       

Deadlines for receiving the
application + Criminal Background Check +  application fee  + Adviser's letter
  • Spring semester 2011:  Fri, 1/21/11
  • Summer Semester (1) 2011: Fri 5/27/11
  • Summer Semester (2) 2011: Fri 6/17/11

       However, since your position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, ...) for choosing your shift in the Lottery is determined by
the date we receive the three (3) elements,
application + Criminal Background Check (CBC) request +
application fee
, it is best for you to send them as soon as possible.

Drug Testing
Results from drug testing return about seven to ten days from the time the specimen is collected.  
Therefore, you should plan on reporting to one of the two
St. Vincent's Immediate Health care Centers
at least a week before the weekend of your orientation.
  • If you are coming from away and cannot get to Connecticut in that time frame,
    arrangements will be made for you to get your drug testing no later than the Friday before your
    weekend orientation.

You will
not be allowed to participate in the emergency department until all parts of the application process
(application, Criminal Background Check, application fee, Immunization form, letter of endorsement and
drug testing) are complete.
