Research Associates (RA) Program in Emergency Medicine
St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport CT
Spring and Summer Semesters, 2011
Subject to IRB approval, the study planned for the upcoming spring, summer and fall semesters will be:

OUTCOME OF AN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT INTERVENTION ON TOBACCO CESSATION AMONG
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT PATIENTS AND VISITORS - A VALIDATION STUDY
  • RAs in the spring and summer semesters, 2009 completed successful research in which almost
40% of all the referrals to the Connecticut Quitline from healthcare facilities came from the
Emergency Department at St. Vincent’s. Using a scripted format, RAs approached as many patients
and visitors as possible on their weekly 4-hour shifts. If they used tobacco for more than 30 days in
their lives, RAs offered the participants a referral to the Connecticut Quitline and 38% of active
    smokers did so.

This year’s study is the next step in the research process. In a new population, and in conjunction with
Hartford Hospital and Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, RAs will repeat the previous work to
demonstrate conclusively their effectiveness in facilitating referral to the Connecticut Quitline for tobacco
users among emergency patients and visitors. This will include a follow-up call by RAs to the participants
who accept a referral.

Spring, 2011
  • The weekend-long orientation for the spring semester will be on Saturday and Sunday, 29 and 30
January, 2011. The spring semester will run through Sunday, 2 May 2011.

Summer, 2011 (First Block)

block will run through Sunday, 14 August.

Summer, 2011 (Second Block)
  • The weekend-long orientation for the second block will be on Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26
June. This block will run through 4 September.

Other Activities
  • Research Associates will be using results from previous RAs' work to provide service for our
patients and visitors by screening for Pap tests, mammograms, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)
tests, digital rectal exams, colon-rectal cancer tests and tobacco cessation.
  • We anticipate this will result in each RA having research or service contact with well over 100
patients and visitors during their time with us.

Other Information
  • RAs are required to serve a minimum of ten (10) shifts per semester.
  • Because of housing and vacation issues, in the summer semesters we allow RAs to switch or
serve extra shifts during earlier weeks of the blocks to insure they get in at least their minimum
    number of shifts
  • There will also be a number of extra-curricular activities available to summer RAs. Click here for
